Nightlife as Form: The Practice of Queer Nightlife in the Twin Cities Today
Throughout the 20th century and continuing today, queer nightlife has gathered artists, cultural producers, and weirdos to create temporary spaces that support and celebrate expansive and inclusive expression of gender, sexuality, and identity. Though the impact of nightlife on personal and collective culture cannot be understated, it is only over the last decade that major cultural institutions have begun to recognize nightlife as an art form. Gathering Twin Cities artists working in Twin Cities nightlife, the panel discussion collectively considers the struggles, urgencies, and joys this art form faces locally today.
Panelists include Nadirah McGill (Gully Boys and Queer Mud Wrestling), Marcela Michelle (Mama San), and Mari Navarro (Gothess).

I was attending the renowned Cooper Union School for the Advancemnt of Art and Architecture in New York City and one evening took in a performance at Lincoln Center in the late 60's. Before the show began, on a warm summer evening, I was waiting in the elegant plaza, enjoying the breeze as well as the sophisticated crowd. All at once there I was standing in front of Cunningham and Cage, and I knew exactly who they were. Well dressed and tall...they both gave me a delightful nod. Admittedly in those salad days I was a cute young man...and I think they figured so, as well. I returned the nod and shyly moved on. Were it today, I would have approached and engaged then in a lively conversation.

Fun Trivia: When Robert filmed "Tell them Willie Boy is Here" at Morongo, Carlos Castaneda was said to be in the crowd watching. Later in private classes Carlos commented that if they ever made a movie from his books, Robert Redford would be an acceptable person to play his part, as long as they didn't assign Anthony Quinn to play his sorcery teacher "Don Juan". I"m making cartoons about how Carlos taught back in the 90s, and h ave cloned Robert Redford from his appearance as "death" in the early "Twilight Zone" episode. So Robert will play Carlos Castaneda in some cartoons. Already has a tiny bit. Morongo, interestingly, was where Carlos started his search for an "informant", eventually leading to him meeting don Juan.

Duchamp appropriated the urinal without crediting the original “creator”, his friend Elsa vov Freytag-Loringhoven , except for one letter to his sister. The incriminating evidence was later published by Duchamp’s biographer, Francis Naumann: “April II [1917] My dear Suzanne- impossible d’écrire. (in the Parisian French of 1917, this meant ‘nothing much to write about’, re Dr. Glynn Thompson.) - I heard from Crotti that you were working hard. Tell me what you are making and if it’s not too difficult to send. Perhaps, I could have a show of your work in the month of October or November-next-here. But tell me what you are making- Tell this detail to the family: The Independents have opened here with immense success. One of my female friends under a masculine pseudonym, Richard Mutt, sent in a porcelain urinal as a sculpture it was not at all indecent-no reason for refusing it. The committee has decided to refuse to show this thing. I have handed in my resignation and it will be a bit of gossip of some value in New York- I would like to have a special exhibition of the people who were refused at the Independents-but that would be a redundancy! And the urinal would have been lonely- See you soon, Affect. Marcel." read more-->legrady.com/writing/history.html

Yeah "was he really serious"? That is an unanswered question. The paintings and writings are really interesting... but the "Anthropométrie"' series are so kitsch and tacky. Hard to know what to think...His love for showmanship makes his actions look sometimes superficial. Despite his intentions to communicate a spiritual experience, it looks too much sometime more like entertainment disguised as art.... Gags, like Fluxus, but without their political goal, and gags that are not intented to be gags but Klein. He is really confusing : at the same time he looks like a poseur and also like a real artist who does some serious research. Weird ...
